This past Saturday, the Community Outreach Program journey began early at 8:30 am when we gathered at Strathmore University, filled with excitement and anticipation. We were heading to Dorothea Rescue Center in Machakos, a refuge for young girls rescued from the streets. We set off with a shared sense of purpose and enthusiasm, eager to lend a helping hand and make a positive impact.
Upon arriving, we were warmly welcomed by the children and staff, whose smiles immediately made us feel at home. After a brief introduction, we were given a guided tour of the center. This allowed us to understand not only the physical spaces where these girls live but also the heart of the center. One of the highlights was visiting the farm, where we saw pigs, cows, rabbits, and a flourishing vegetable garden. The farm is vital in teaching the girls valuable life skills in farming and sustainability, empowering them to become more self-reliant. We also explored the chapel, dormitories, and guest rooms, gaining insight into how the center provides holistic care, nurturing the girls’ emotional and physical well-being.
With our purpose clear, we formed teams to help in different ways. Some of us prepared nutritious meals for the children and staff, while others focused on cleaning and maintaining the spaces to ensure a comfortable environment. A few of us spent quality time with the children, engaging them in fun games, dances, and activities that filled the air with laughter and joy.
As we worked together, it became clear that we were not only giving our time but also building stronger bonds within our team. Conversations flowed naturally, friendships blossomed, and we realized how rewarding it was to be part of a collective effort while connecting with the girls.
One of the day’s most memorable moments was the playtime with the children. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and we were blown away by the energy and creativity they poured into their dance performances. The sisters who run the center were incredibly kind and made us feel part of the Dorothea family, sharing their passion and dedication to the girls’ well-being. Their warmth and commitment were nothing short of inspiring.
Once the food was ready, we all gathered for a meal. Serving the children and sitting down to eat with them allowed us to hear their stories; stories of hardship, courage, and hope. These young girls had faced unimaginable challenges, yet their optimism for the future was unwavering. Their resilience in the face of adversity left a lasting impression on all of us. Their heartfelt gratitude for our visit made us realize how powerful our presence and support could be.
During our time at the center, we also learned a special chant from the children that quickly became our favorite.
“It is wonderful to be here, it is lovely to be here, it is wa it is na, it is na, it is wa!” we chanted away.
The chant echoed throughout the center, and we felt a deep sense of unity and joy in that moment. It was a simple yet powerful reminder of the happiness and hope that our visit brought to the girls.
As the day ended , we took a moment to reflect on the experience. While we had come to offer help, we found that we had gained so much more in return;a greater understanding of resilience, an appreciation for the importance of community service, and unforgettable memories with the children and our fellow volunteers. We discussed the possibility of returning to Dorothea Rescue Center, fostering an ongoing connection.
This outreach experience was a powerful reminder of small acts of kindness. Whether cooking a meal, cleaning, playing with children, or simply listening can make a lasting difference. We left Dorothea Rescue Center with full hearts, deep gratitude, and an invaluable lesson: community, compassion, and kindness truly can transform lives.
