Welcome to the Hatua ya Kwanza! This is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children while developing essential skills for your personal and professional growth.
Previously called the ALP programme, Hatua ya Kwanza is an initiative run by the Strathmore University Community Service Department, in partnership with RELI Africa and Challenge Aid, designed to enhance numeracy and literacy levels in schools located in Nairobi’s slum areas. Currently, this programme is active in several schools spread across different slum areas, which are organized into five clusters. Your involvement will directly contribute to improving the education system in these communities while providing you with valuable hands-on teaching experience.
How the Programme Works
Training & Field Practice
Upon joining the program, you’ll undergo a one-week training program designed to equip you with the necessary teaching skills and insights into working in these communities. Afterward, you’ll participate in a one-day field practice to get firsthand experience before being assigned to one of our partner schools.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Once training is complete, you’ll work directly with students from grades 3 to 6, supporting their numeracy and literacy development in areas such as basic Mathematics reading and comprehension. Students will be assessed and grouped into four levels based on their improved abilities.
Impact of the Program
Hatua ya Kwanza isn’t just about improving literacy and numeracy – it’s about making a lasting impact on children’s futures. Your involvement will help children in slum areas develop the skills they need to succeed in life. By providing these young minds with the ability to read and comprehend, you are opening doors to new possibilities.
As a volunteer, you will:
- Gain hands-on teaching experience
- Enhance your leadership and mentoring skills
- Contribute to community development and educational sustainability
Through the program, many students have successfully progressed to the Story level, thanks to the support provided by Strathmore students and teachers. Your contributions will ensure more success stories like these.
