When Jesse Wanda received the Vice-Chancellor’s Run Scholarship at Strathmore University, it opened a new chapter in his academic journey. A Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering student from Kiminini, Western Kenya, Jesse is making the most of the opportunity to grow both academically and personally.
The scholarship eased the financial burden of university education, allowing Jesse to focus on his studies and engage fully in campus life. He is actively involved in the debate club, where he hones his critical thinking skills, and regularly spends time in the library and on the football field at the Sports Complex, building friendships and teamwork. His experience reflects the kind of all-rounded development Strathmore University encourages in its scholars.
For him, the scholarship lifted an enormous burden from his parents’ shoulders and positioned him as a role model for his younger siblings. “My sisters now see what’s possible through education,” he shares. This generational impact is the beginning of the ripple effect created by the VC Scholarship.
His determination to pay it forward makes Jesse’s journey particularly inspiring. He spends time mentoring his siblings, applying lessons from his own experiences to guide them. Looking ahead, he plans to volunteer with Strathmore’s Macheo programme, extending his mentorship to other young students. Jesse is currently preparing for Service-Based Learning projects where he will apply his engineering knowledge to benefit underserved communities, starting with teaching math in local schools back in Kiminini.
Jesse’s long-term vision reflects the true value of the scholarship. He aims to pursue advanced degrees and eventually create educational opportunities for others. “Strathmore didn’t just give me an education, it gave me wings,” he says. “Now I want to help others soar too.” His message to scholarship supporters is profound: “Your investment doesn’t just change one life; it transforms entire families and communities.”
This future engineer embodies Strathmore’s mission of developing leaders who drive positive change. Jesse is preparing to make his mark on the world through classroom learning, extracurricular activities, and a growing commitment to service. His story demonstrates how strategic educational support can unlock potential that benefits society beyond university walls.
To fellow students, Jesse advises they, “Embrace every opportunity Strathmore provides. Join clubs, play sports, but never lose sight of your academic mission. We have been given extraordinary tools to build a better future.” As he continues his journey, Jesse stands as a testament to the multiplying power of education and the enduring impact of scholarship support.
The VC Run makes stories like Jesse’s possible. Each registration and donation represents another life that can be transformed, another future leader who can emerge, and another community that can be strengthened through education. Jesse’s journey from scholarship recipient to aspiring change-maker shows just how far that impact can reach.
