On Saturday, September 14th, the Strathmore Communication and Consultancy Clinic (SCCC) visited Kibera Pride Initiative Organization, with the goal of creating meaningful and lasting experiences by giving back to the community. The visit, entirely organized by communication students, brought joy to the children at the home, showcasing love, the power of sharing, and the cherished memories made through selfless acts.
The visit, which stemmed from a week-long donation drive and meticulous planning by the members, exceeded expectations with an impressive turnout from both the clinic and the wider Strathmore community. For the student organizers, the experience was deeply rewarding. Despite initial concerns about attendance, particularly on a Saturday, the leadership team remained driven by their commitment to giving back, leveraging their communication skills and the power of social media to make an impact.
Under the slogan ‘Give A Little, Change A Lot,’ many students embarked on their first visit to Kibera, eager to make a meaningful impact while creating cherished memories with the children. Upon arriving at Kibera Pride, they were met with the children’s beaming smiles, a warm welcome that instantly made them feel at home and set the tone for an unforgettable experience.
The group was formally welcomed by the ‘Auntie’ of the home, who shared insights into the daily life of Kibera Pride, where she cares for the children, ensuring they are well-fed and well-rested.
The event began with lively performances from the children, whose energetic dancing captivated the entire group. Some students cradled babies until they fell asleep, while others jumped into the kitchen to help prepare a hearty lunch of potatoes, beef, and rice. Meanwhile, the photographers and content team ensured every special moment was captured.
After hours of dancing, playing, storytelling, and even napping together, both the students and children were pleasantly exhausted. To hold everyone over until lunch, juices, biscuits, and nostalgic Wow candies were distributed, sparking fond childhood memories and adding an extra layer of joy to the day. The shared laughter around the sweets became one of the event’s highlights.
When lunch was finally served, the children proudly modeled their new outfits. As the day drew to a close, warm hugs and heartfelt goodbyes filled the air, with plans for a return visit already in motion. Feedback from both the students and the home was overwhelmingly positive, marking the event as a resounding success.
The visit was a great success. It reinforced the idea that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. The SCCC team was deeply satisfied and grateful for the opportunity to spend their Saturday making a difference at the Kibera Pride Initiative Organization.
SCCC is a student-led initiative that equips Strathmore University communication students with practical skills. These include photography, videography, writing, social media management, event planning, editing, presentation skills, and more. The clinic provides exposure to the communication industry, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their careers post-graduation. The clinic also organizes guest lectures, where industry professionals share their experiences, offering students a glimpse into the realities of the communication field and opportunities to connect with potential employers.
