Shining a Light on Potential: Strathmore’s Scholarship Impact on Rasfa Asman

In our society, where shadows of inequality often obscure the brilliance of potential, education stands as a beacon of hope. For many, however, the path to knowledge is fraught with obstacles, a reality that renders the written word a distant, unattainable dream. Yet, within this landscape, institutions like Strathmore University extend a hand, offering not just an education but a chance to rewrite destinies.

Strathmore University, guided by its core value of social responsibility, has established the Macheo Achievement programme. This initiative, supported by the Community Service Centre, is a testament to collective generosity and provides opportunities for bright, underprivileged students to access quality higher education. The programme’s impact resonates far beyond the individual, echoing through families and communities. As one student’s potential is unlocked, a ripple effect of positive change begins.

Rafsa Asman, a second-year Bachelor of Arts in Communication student, embodies the transformative power of the Macheo Programme. Raised in the challenging environment of Kibra, one of Nairobi’s largest slums, Rafsa’s aspirations were often overshadowed by the harsh realities of her surroundings.

“In my community,” Rafsa explains, “completing secondary education was considered the pinnacle of achievement. Tertiary education felt like an impossible dream.” Without the Macheo scholarship, her path might have led to early marriage or manual labor, a fate she was determined to avoid.

Rafsa’s journey to Strathmore began in her secondary school years when she was selected for the Macheo interview. From a pool of twenty talented students, only ten, including Rafsa, were chosen to join the programme. The moment she received the news, her heart soared. With its vibrant learning environment, Strathmore had always felt like a sanctuary, a place where she could cultivate her dreams.
“Strathmore felt like home,” she recalls, “a place where my aspirations could take root and flourish.”

The Macheo programme provided a supportive community that recognized and nurtured her potential. As a beneficiary of the Financial Aid programme, she experiences firsthand the university’s commitment to its students. Best-performing students are rewarded, encouraging them to excel further.

Rafsa’s ambition extends beyond personal success. She aspires to specialize in journalism, using her voice to amplify the untold stories of Kibra and beyond. “I want to bring these stories to national and international audiences,” she says, “to spark change and inspire hope.” Her vision is to shed light on the challenges faced by her community, fostering understanding and driving meaningful action.

Rafsa’s experience at Strathmore has also enriched her personal life, forging meaningful friendships that provide support and camaraderie. She urges fellow students to remain focused and consistent in their studies, emphasizing that perseverance is the cornerstone of success.
The impact of Strathmore’s generosity is profound. “Words cannot express the gratitude I feel,” Rafsa says. She implores the Strathmore community to continue their spirit of giving, knowing that their contributions illuminate futures and transform lives.
Through the Macheo programme, Strathmore University is empowering individuals to become agents of change, illuminating futures that were once shrouded in darkness.
