Strathmore University came alive to celebrate a decade of the Staff Giving initiative from 7th-11th October, a milestone that affirms the university’s commitment to ‘Service to Society,’ one of its core pillars. This initiative ensures that underprivileged students can access quality education, providing them with the opportunity to transform their lives and, ultimately, the lives of their families.
Since its inception, the Staff Giving initiative has provided over 300 students with full or partial scholarships, covering tuition, accommodation, and transport. These students, who are determined to excel academically, often struggle to meet daily expenses, and the support they receive bridges critical financial gaps, enabling them to focus on their studies and personal growth.
The 10th anniversary celebration was not just about reflecting on past achievements, but also about inspiring even greater involvement from the Strathmore University staff. Staff members gathered in high spirits to participate in a raffle competition, with winners taking home a variety of prizes, including a TV, cooker, smartwatches, sound bars, duvets, power banks, bags, utensils, and gift vouchers from Naivas Supermarket and Text Book Center. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, as colleagues cheered one another on, all while supporting a cause that continues to make a profound impact.
Prof. Vincent Omwenga, Chair of the Staff Giving Committee, reflected on the journey so far, noting that over 30% of the staff have contributed to the fund over the years. He also issued a rallying call for even more participation, stating, “Our goal is to see 90% of our staff involved in this noble initiative. Every contribution, no matter the size, plays a role in changing a student’s life.”
As Strathmore University looks ahead to the next chapter of Staff Giving, the spirit of this 10th-anniversary celebration serves as a reminder that every act of giving matters. Behind every scholarship and bursary lies a story of resilience, hope, and a brighter future—a future that the university’s staff has helped shape.
As the Staff Giving initiative continues to grow, so does its capacity to uplift more students, helping them reach their full potential and achieve their dreams. With the goal of reaching 90% participation from the Strathmore community, the campaign aims to ensure that no student has to choose between attending class and affording their next meal or place to sleep.
