The Impact of a Scholarship on Sophia Adhiambo’s Journey

“Receiving a scholarship felt surreal, I had never imagined that someone from my background could be awarded such an opportunity.” Sophia Adhiambo, a 4th year International Studies student, recalls.
For her, the scholarship wasn’t just financial aid; it was a turning point. It opened doors to Strathmore, where she would not only excel academically but also undergo a complete transformation in her outlook of life.
Her story? Inspiring and a testament to resilience.
Now, as she stands at the threshold of graduation, she reflects on her incredible journey: one filled with challenges, resilience, and growth.“Time is moving quickly,” she says, as she wraps up the final week of classes before study week and exams, and polishes the last chapter of her research paper.

Her path wasn’t a simple one. Growing up in Mukuru slums, she faced financial challenges, and her journey to higher education seemed uncertain at times. “I had so many questions,” she recalls. “What happens after high school? How do I get into university? Which one should I choose? What should I study? And most of all, how would I ever afford it?”

While she was in Mukuru slums, she joined the Macheo Programme, where she received mentorship and attended tuition classes at Strathmore. During this time, she connected with people who guided her along her journey, offering support and direction when she needed it most. She shared her struggles, unaware that help was already on its way. Through mentorship and encouragement, she found the guidance she had been searching for, opening doors she never imagined possible. She applied to Strathmore hoping that the get

With newfound hope, she applied to Strathmore, holding onto the dream of higher education. But after waiting for a call that never came, uncertainty crept in. Just when she thought all hope was lost, the Macheo coordinator reached out, encouraging her to apply again. Thanks to this timely intervention, she submitted her application for a scholarship. After a tense month of waiting, the news finally arrived, she had been awarded a 100% scholarship, a life-changing opportunity that set her on the path to a brighter future.
The change was profound: “The university helped me realize that despite my background, I can aim for something bigger and better.” This shift in mindset motivated her throughout her high school years and ultimately led her to apply to Strathmore, where she was surrounded by like-minded, ambitious students.

Her student experience was nothing short of amazing and transformative. Being in an environment that encouraged critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration was eye-opening. The rigorous academics challenged her, pushing her beyond her limits, while hands-on projects and engaging discussions deepened her understanding of her field, transforming knowledge into real-world skills. Every lesson, every challenge, and every interaction shaped her into a more confident and capable individual, preparing her for a future filled with opportunity. Yet, her journey wasn’t just about academics, it was also about personal growth. “There was a time when I struggled with low self-esteem, isolating myself and feeling helpless,” she admits. But through mentorship at Strathmore, she learned to speak with confidence and clarity, finding her voice and embracing her potential. “The way I communicate now is a huge improvement from when I was in high school,” she reflects. “I’ve grown so much, and I’m incredibly grateful for the people who have guided me.”

Just as someone once lit the way for her, she has now become a guiding light for others. With passion and purpose, she mentors young girls from her community, especially those from Mukuru and the Macheo Achievement Program, helping them see beyond the challenges of their present and into the possibilities of their future. “I want them to see beyond their immediate surroundings,” she says with conviction.

Looking back on her journey, she reflects on some of her most cherished moments on campus, the thrill of learning, the friendships that became like family, and the countless opportunities that broadened her horizons. Every lecture, every challenge, and every shared experience shaped her into the person she is today. It was a journey filled with growth, discovery, and transformation, one she will always be grateful for.
