What the Leadership Getaway at Tigoni Taught Me

Every year, Strathmore Mentoring Services curates a three-day Leadership getaway in the lush landscapes of Tigoni, designed for student leaders, top achievers, and heads of student clubs. The Getaway serves as a potent blend of personal growth, intellectual challenge, and deep, meaningful transformation. At its core, the question is: as we evolve, how do we ensure those around us grow too? The essence of this getaway was all about that: growing as individuals and as leaders while lifting others along the way.

Quinter Jaika, 3rd year Electrical and Electronic Engineering student recounts her experience that was both meaningful and deeply transformative. For her, The Getaway was both meaningful and deeply transformative. Through a series of engaging and thought-provoking sessions, we were inspired to reflect deeply on our roles as individuals, leaders, and members of society.

Ms. Sheila Kibicho kicked things off with a session on Feminine Genius. She urged us to recognize the extraordinary power in our femininity, to honor the unique qualities that define us, and to celebrate our strengths unapologetically. Her message was a call to not just embrace our roles as women but to own them with pride and confidence. Ms. Gillian Omondi then gave us a fresh take on Etiquette, guiding us through the finer points of social interactions, from dining to conversations. What struck me most was her perspective on etiquette not as an outdated societal expectation but as a vital tool for personal empowerment. It was about showing up with grace, dignity, and respect in every interaction. Mr. Babu’s talk on Service Leadership left me with an overwhelming sense of purpose. His philosophy aligned perfectly with the essence of true leadership leading through service, humility, and a commitment to the well-being of others. It was a call to action, a reminder that leadership is not about power or title but about lifting others up and creating positive change. And then there was Dr. Irene Ngunjiri, who took us through the empowering concept of Self-Authoring. She showed us how to harness our ideas, take ownership of our narratives, and use our voices to create the future we envision. Her session was a revelation reminding us that we have the power to author our own stories, define our own success, and spark meaningful change.

Another pivotal session was the Women in Leadership discussion, where my peers and I shared personal stories of balancing the duality of being both strong leaders and embracing our femininity. It was a powerful reminder that leadership is not about conforming to stereotypes or societal expectations but about finding our authentic voices and leading with courage and conviction

One of the most memorable moments was a session led by Mr. and Dr. Khakata, who tackled the delicate topics of personal life, dating, and marriage. Their discussion wasn’t just insightful, it was both entertaining and deeply thought-provoking. It sparked candid reflections on the complexities of relationships in today’s world, including the rising issue of stalking and how to navigate the painful reality of rejection. We laughed, we learned, and we grew together.

The food was a highlight in itself, with the Nyama Choma experience being the pinnacle of enjoyment. Our meals were works of art, meticulously prepared to offer an unforgettable culinary journey. It was bittersweet to enjoy such delicious food, knowing it was just one part of the rich experience. Beyond the food, the retreat offered a wide array of activities, from an energizing Zumba session to spiritual enrichment through Meditation, Mass, and Confession. We also relived our childhood through games like Police & Robbers and Three Sticks. These activities weren’t just fun they also cultivated physical vitality and emotional well-being, adding a playful dimension to our learning.

Mentoring the Next Generation

A standout moment for me was our visit to Umoja Junior Secondary School. We had the privilege of mentoring Grade 8 and 9 students, providing them with career advice, study techniques, and insights into their future aspirations. We also distributed study materials, snacks, and sanitary towels resources that contributed to the students’ growth and development. It was a humbling and fulfilling experience to give back to the community and support these young minds on their educational journey.

Connecting with fellow Stratizens was one of the most rewarding parts of the retreat. In that unique and open setting, I got to meet people I might never have crossed paths with on campus. We shared stories, laughs, and ideas forming bonds that I know will last well beyond those three days. It reminded me just how valuable it is to step outside your usual circles and truly listen to different perspectives. Looking back, the Getaway was a beautiful blend of learning, self-reflection, and genuine connection. It sparked growth in every sense mentally, emotionally, and socially. It captured the energy of youth, the depth of purpose, and the joy of community. More than anything, it proved just how powerful shared experiences can be in shaping not only who we are, but who we’re becoming.
