What is Staff Giving?

In 2014, to help our students meet some of their day to day needs, the Staff Giving Campaign was launched whereby we invited Strathmore University members of staff to be part of the campaign by making monthly contributions to the Staff Giving Fund. This was an idea from 4 staff members who had been privately supporting their mentees whose family situation had drastically changed and could no longer afford accommodation/meals/transport. The initial idea was for it to provide stipend and meal plans to students.

With the help of staff champions, the silent phase of the campaign began in October 2014 and by early 2015 we had 50 sign-ups. The aim was to:

  • Create awareness of the existence of the Staff Giving Fund
  • Create understanding of the staff giving campaign
  • Wide participation: Drive 80% participation across campus

What is our Mission?

The mission of Strathmore University is to provide an all-round quality education in an atmosphere of freedom and responsibility excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, ethical and social development and service to the society. By creating the fund, we were giving ourselves the opportunity to contribute in the development and sustenance of our student. With funds raised, deserving students are able to:

  • afford decent accommodation,
  • have a stipend to for transport costs
  • get a meal allowance
  • access emergency bursaries

Strathmore University members of staff actively participate in this campaign with over 450 members signing up through monthly payslip contribution. As of December 2019, the monthly contributions amounted to a total of Kes 250,000 and a total of Kes 12,000,000 since its inception in October 2014. The Housekeeping Department is the greatest supporter of this fund with over 90% participation

What are we doing?

Currently, the fund supports emergencies in tuition fees, meal plan, accommodation and stipend for continuing students. Some of the frequent beneficiaries of this fund are students whose family financial situations have changed, partial scholarship students, and sports scholars.

Every year, we run the Staff Giving Campaign week in the last week of October and on the last day of the campaign week, the Vice Chancellor hosts members of staff to a cocktail. This has become a popular tradition and members of staff are happy to be part of this legacy.

“The students supported would be the next professors and economists of this world. I applaud you all for taking part in this initiative. Caring for one another in such a practical way, is laying a foundation for a wonderful legacy. My pledge as promised to you at the start of this initiative is to match the giving contributed yearly, and this year is no exception,” Prof. Odhiambo stated during the 2017 cocktail.
